Child’s Death in Hot Car Leads to Unusual Murder Charge

A Georgia father was charged with murder and child cruelty Thursday after leaving his 22-month-old son in a sweltering car for nearly seven hours, an outcome that surprised legal experts.

Police say Justin Ross Harris, 33, drove to work Wednesday with his son in the back seat after forgetting to drop him off at daycare, according to media reports. As Harris drove home, he noticed his son unresponsive in the back seat. The death marked the second time this week a child has perished in the back of a car. On Monday, a nine-month-old girl died in her father’s pickup truck on after being left there as her father went to work. He, too, had forgotten to drop his child off with a caregiver.
